Is Buddhism older than Hinduism?

During the Vedic era, when the Vedic scriptures and teachings were compiled, Hinduism did not exist as a separate religion. British intellectuals in the early decades of the 19th century created the term Hinduism to describe the religion.

Animism and polytheism, with an emphasis on the worship of nature's forces and deities, seem to have characterized India's oldest religious traditions. The Vedic religion and the Brahmana doctrine are two examples of how these customs developed into more sophisticated belief and practice systems throughout time. The Vedas, a canon of ancient scriptures written between the years 1500 and 500 BCE, served as the basis for the Vedic religion. The Brahmana doctrine, which developed later, was a ritualistic and sacrificially based religious and social order.

An important turning point in the history of Hinduism occurred when Buddhism emerged in the sixth century BCE and posed a serious threat to the Brahmana doctrine's hegemony. Buddhism, in contrast to the Vedas, places an emphasis on personal enlightenment and the renunciation of worldly pursuits. As a result, numerous new philosophical and theological traditions emerged in India during a time of heated dispute.
