 Before Buddhism, there was no such thing as Hinduism as a religion, hence the name "Hinduism" is very new. The ancient Vedic civilisation, also known as "Brahmanism," is the source of the religious beliefs and practices that are today understood to be part of Hinduism.


Hinduism is built upon a body of literature known as the Vedas, which are thought to have been written between 1500 BCE and 500 BCE. The Brahmins, who were the priestly class in ancient India, are described in these writings as engaging in a variety of religious ceremonies and customs.
