What are the real reasons for the assassination of Brihadratha Maurya by Pushyamitra Shunga?

  • Brihadratha was the 9th and last Mauryan Emperor. One of the main factors that led to his assassination was religion. The killer, Pushyamitra, was a Brahman commander-in-chief and a follower of the Hindu deity Shiva.
  • It is widely known that the Mauryan Empire was famous for its adherence to Buddhism, a fact that has been overlooked by the history of India. There is evidence to suggest that Brihadratha was killed as a result of a Brahmin conspiracy.
  • Various accounts exist regarding the motive behind Pushyamitra Shunga's murder of Brihadratha, most widely accepted reason was to the ban on animal sacrifices. According to historical records, Brihadratha was an unpopular ruler who faced criticism for his inability to emulate the achievements of his illustrious predecessors.( i think it is also a fabricated story ) During his reign, the Mauryan Empire also experienced a decline in its power and influence.
  • Pushyamitra Shunga, who served as a general in the army, was unhappy with the Buddhist policies of the Mauryan rulers, particularly the prohibition of animal sacrifices. This ban was said to have deprived many people of their source of income. As a devout Hindu, Pushyamitra viewed the ban on sacrifices as an assault on his religion and an insult to the traditions of his people.
  • In 185 BC, Pushyamitra Shunga killed Mauryan Emperor, Brahmadra and completely changed the course of religion in India.

NOTE:- Pushyamitra cruelly persecuted the Buddhists, even though some modern scientists shared their cynicism. In 148 BC his son Agnimitra succeeded Pushyamitra Shunga. Pushyamitra is reported to have carried out various Ashvamedha campaigns to legitimize his right to rule among the Brahmana Hindus.
The inscriptions of the Shunga dynasty have been discovered in various places, The
Divyavadana, a Buddhist text, mentions that the Shunga empire extended as far as Ayodhya under the rule of Pushyamitra, a non-Buddhist monarch who is said to have persecuted Buddhist monks. the Divyavadana mentions that an army was sent to persecute Buddhist monks as far as Sakala district in the north-west of Punjab.

Some historical accounts suggest that Brihadratha was fond of the company of women and that his minister, Vasudeva Kanva, may have also been involved in his assassination
